The remains of a giant Fin Whale washed ashore at Port Parham last weekend could end up in your garden as compost.

While the skeleton of the rare 17-metre whale will be retained by the SA Museum, the huge carcass will be composted by leading recycler, Jeffries at its composting facility north of Adelaide.

Jeffries received the first semi truck load of whale flesh yesterday afternoon.

Jeffries Managing Director Lachlan Jeffries said the job of composting the whale’s remains – awarded by the Mallala Council – was one of the company’s more unusual tasks but that it would provide a great addition to its organic compost products.
